Many changes have started to occur now that the healthcare reform bill was passed. The Medicare Advantage system seems to be the part of Medicare the most affected

The 500$ billion that intends to be saved from the Medicare Advantage system will be used largely to pay for the 900$ billion health care reform bill cost. The subsides that are set to be eliminated from the Medicare Advantage companies is where the government intends to reclaim this money. The Medicare Advantage companies are the privately ran insurance companies who cover people eligible for Medicare.

Medicare+Choice was the original birth name in 1997 when Medicare Advantage got it’s start. Competition throughout the insurance industry among the privately ran companies was intended to save money and reduce costs. By the spot lighting of preventative services and care the insurance companies were able to convince our government that this would be the end to all future disease. The government started spending large amounts of money to help elevate the newly named system, “Medicare Advantage” in 2003 with the Medicare Modernization Act, as well as created the new part for Rx, Part D.

Many new perks such as dental, vision, hearing benefits, free gym memberships, lower co-pays and lower premiums were some of the upgrades that were paid for from this Federal spending. Much of these benefits were not given to traditional Medicare enrolled. The insurance companies pockets got fatter seeing as that is where most of thee subsidies went that were be being paid out of Medicare Part A. In June of 2009 the Medicare Payment advisory Commission reported and extra 12$ billion in spending more on the Medicare Advantage enrolled than original Medicare would of cost.

The new House health reform bill and the Senate Finance Committee bill reduce, but do not end Medicare Advantage subsidies. Even though the Medicare Advantage system is not ending, with these reduced benefits, many seniors will have to begin their search for other options to get adequate healthcare coverage. About 25 percent of the more than 40 million seniors enrolled in Medicare are in private Advantage plans, including over 1 million in Florida.

Starting in June 1, 2010, Medicare supplement insurance Plans M and N will be available for purchase.

Medicare supplement Plans M and N are cost sharing plans. They will have lower monthly premiums in exchange for higher out of pocket payments for medical expenses. For instance, Plans M and N will not cover the Part B deductible and Part B excess charges.

Plan M will cover half of the Part A deductible. Plan N will cover the entire Part A deductible. Plan N may additionally have instances in which co-pays will be required. Plans K, L, M and N will be suitable low cost alternatives to Medicare Advantage Plans (minus the prexcription medication coverage and network restrictions.) Thus, you may visit any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare patients.

Most insurance companies will offer Plan N on a guaranteed issue basis in the majority of states. This will come as a great relief to those who may have health conditions which prove troublesome when obtaining coverage which requires medical underwriting. Medicare supplement Plan M, on the other hand, will require underwriting with most companies in many situations.

Several insurance providers are now offering Medicare supplement Plans M and N, and you may now start signing up for these types of coverage provided that your start date is June 1, 2010 or later.

Medicare supplement Plans M and N will be cost effective ways to cover most of what Original Medicare Parts A and B do not cover. Still, be sure to do thorough research on these plans to make sure you are aware and at peace with the out of pocket expenses you may need to pay.
